Cruising The Alps On A Turbo-Glide!!! July 24-26 , 2001
Grindelwald was our first experience riding
on Cog Trains in Switzerland. Teri and Fessi mug for the camera on
the way up the Jungfraujoch.
As the train ascends the mountain it enters a series
of tunnels where it stays for most of the trip. At a couple of points
during the climb the train stops inside the tunnel and we departed to view
the mountains and glaciers from observation windows in the side of the
tunnel.
These ice sculptures are carved into the walls of
the "Ice Palace" which you enter when leaving the train station at the
top.
The tunnels that make up the "Ice Palace" are as
much as fifty feet below the surface of the glacier.
The view from "The Top Of Europe".
When we left Grindelwald on the train we had to stop
at the midway point to switch trains and continue on to the top.
This is the train station at the midway stop.
Just waitin' fer our train.
This is just a sample of some of the scenery which
was just outside the window of the train, when we weren't in a tunnel that
is.
In Grindelwald we spent out first night in a real
"Swiss Chalet". Grindelwald is a real touristy area and you would
expect the prices to reflect that, fortunately we found that being Americans
we were used to being gouged and it was refreshing to stay someplace nice
for under $50 USD!
As we came to expect while dining in Switzerland
eating outside is a must. This is the view of the Wetterhorn from
our dinner table.
