Glen Canyon Dam

When we crossed the bridge over Glen Canyon the day before yesterday we decided that on the way back through we were going to have to stop and check out Glen Canyon Dam visitor center and do the tourist thing for an hour or two.

So...That's just what we did!!! This dam was completed in 1966 and is one of the few concrete dams actually competed in our lifetime. With the capability of holding back a depth of 560 feet of water at peak capacity this is one impressive structure.

The visitor center hangs over the west canyon wall giving a view of Glen Canyon Dam and Glen Canyon Bridge that is unsurpassed.

The visitor center itself is a must see if you can tolerate the security restrictions. Photos, history and a VERY knowledgable staff made this stop worthwhile.

Even though the water level of the lake is 117' below capacity, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon are an impressive sight.

On the downside I must tell you, if you plan on visiting this marvel of American Engineering please remember to leave all deadly weapons in your vehicle. You know, knives, guns, artillary pieces, bazooka's, WMD's and of course...Tweezers!!! Expect to have to go through a metal detector or as in Joe's case not only the metal detector but be scanned with a metal detecting wand.

"Those who surrender their liberty in the name of security shall receive neither", Thomas Jefferson.

After I was detected and scanned to ensure that I carried no contraband, Teri asked me in front of the guard about this quote, I declined to repeat it on the premise that I didn't wish to be handcuffed. Welcome to America, "Home of the FREE!!!!!" 'Nuf said.

Don't forget to go back up to the top and check out the pictures!!
